My name is Elena Battaglini. I am an Italian environmental and territorial sociologist working at the intersection of systems thinking, socio-ecological transformation and cognitive design.
For more than thirty years, I have explored how territories, organisations and communities learn, adapt and evolve. My work moves across sociology, complexity theories, spatial studies and, more recently, cognitive systems and artificial intelligence. Throughout this journey, I have remained guided by one central question:
How can human systems transform without losing meaning, connection and collective intelligence?
Very early in my career, I realised that knowledge alone does not transform territories. What transforms them is the capacity of people, institutions and environments to resonate, learn and evolve together.
This conviction has shaped both my research and my life.
From Fieldwork to Systems Thinking
I began my professional journey working on cooperation projects in Africa and Latin America, engaging directly with communities facing fragile ecological, economic and social conditions. Those years taught me that territories are not static geographical entities, but living relational systems shaped by memory, conflict, adaptation and imagination.
After completing my PhD in Environmental and Territorial Sociology, I continued my work within the interface between science and policy as a senior scientist at the Institute for Economic and Social Research (IRES), later merged into the Giuseppe Di Vittorio Foundation.
Over the years, I have coordinated and contributed to numerous European and international research projects focused on sustainable development, ecological transition, territorial innovation and governance. My research progressively integrated systems thinking, futures studies, participatory design, decision analysis and civic technologies, leading me to conceive territories as complex adaptive systems in continuous co-evolution.
Rather than analysing places as static backgrounds of social action, I have always understood territory as a dynamic cognitive and relational ecosystem, where humans, institutions, technologies and environments continuously influence one another.
Transformative Resilience
Within this framework, I developed the concept of transformative resilience: the capacity of socio-ecological systems not simply to resist crises, but to evolve through learning, adaptation and the integration of new knowledge.
For me, resilience is not stability. It is an evolutionary process.
This perspective has guided decades of interdisciplinary research, fieldwork and experimentation across rural areas, inner territories, industrial transitions and governance systems.
Today, it also informs my work on human–AI ecosystems and collective intelligence infrastructures.
Research, Teaching and International Networks
I am the author of over ninety scientific publications and have lectured in Italian and international academic institutions for many years. I have had the privilege of training generations of PhD students, researchers and professionals in socio-spatial analysis, sustainability and systemic design approaches.
My methodological contributions span participatory GIS, deep mapping, practice theory, territorial innovation and socio-spatial design methodologies, always with the aim of connecting scientific rigour with transformative action.
Throughout my career, I have worked within interdisciplinary networks involving sociologists, architects, urbanists, economists, environmental scientists and policy makers, contributing to an international dialogue on sustainability, territorialisation and socio-ecological transformation.
Circular Sustainable Resonance – Alta Sabina
Since 2022, I have served as the designer and scientific director of the ‘Circular Sustainable Resonance – Alta Sabina’ strategy, which was selected for funding under the Italian NextGenerationEU Green Communities programme.
This initiative represents the convergence of more than thirty years of research, action-research, civic technologies and systemic territorial experimentation. It integrates ecological transition, participatory governance, digital infrastructures and collective intelligence into a place-based development model for fragile inner territories.
Social Resonance Systems Thinking®
Ho fondato il metodo Social Resonance Design Systems Thinking®, registrato presso l’EUIPO. Un framework che integra il concetto di risonanza di Hartmut Rosa con gli strumenti della sociologia spazialista e dell’ingegneria cognitiva – una cornice di direzione e senso per chi progetta sistemi territoriali complessi. Da questa cornice è nato GENIUS LOCI – Social Resonance AI Engine: una piattaforma di intelligenza artificiale orientata alla valorizzazione dell’intelligenza collettiva e alla progettazione di ecosistemi Human-AI per contesti complessi.
Over time, my research evolved toward a broader reflection on resonance as a condition for sustainable transformation.
This led me to found Social Resonance Systems Thinking®, a framework registered with the EUIPO that integrates Hartmut Rosa’s theory of resonance with spatial sociology, systems thinking and cognitive engineering.
The intuition behind this work is simple yet radical:
territories become fragile when relationships lose resonance — between people, institutions, environments and meaning itself.
Social Resonance Systems Thinking® was created to help organisations, communities and territorial systems redesign these relationships consciously, generating adaptive, collaborative and future-oriented ecosystems.
From this framework emerged GENIUS LOCI – Social Resonance AI Engine, an artificial intelligence platform focused on collective intelligence, territorial governance and the design of human–AI ecosystems for complex environments.
A Vision That Resonates
Today, my work continues to explore how scientific knowledge, cognitive infrastructures and human creativity can contribute to more resilient, conscious and interconnected futures.
I believe ecological transition is not only a technological or economic challenge.
It is, above all, a cultural, cognitive and relational transformation.
This is the vision behind Social Resonance.
A vision grounded in systemic thinking, scientific rigour and the living intelligence of places, communities and relationships.
